The Kitchen Question Most Kamloops Homeowners Ask First

If you're thinking about renovating your kitchen, the first question is almost always the same: what is this actually going to cost? It's a fair question — and a frustrating one to get a clear answer to, because the honest reply is "it depends on a dozen choices you haven't made yet."

We can do better than that. After 40+ years of remodelling kitchens in Kamloops and the Thompson Okanagan, Hodder Construction has seen every version of this project, from a simple cabinet-and-counter refresh in a 1980s Sahali split-level to a full gut-and-rebuild in an Aberdeen custom home. Here's a realistic look at what you can expect to spend, what drives those numbers, and how to plan a kitchen renovation that finishes on time, on budget, and on your wishlist.

What Kitchen Renovations Cost in Kamloops in 2026

Kitchen renovation budgets in Kamloops typically fall into three tiers. These ranges assume professional labour, permits where required, and finishes appropriate to each tier — not flooring marked down at a clearance sale or cabinets you assemble yourself.

Cosmetic refresh: $20,000–$45,000. This is paint, new countertops, refaced or repainted cabinets, an updated backsplash, new lighting, possibly new appliances, and updated plumbing fixtures. The footprint stays the same, no walls move, and major mechanical systems aren't touched. A great option when the existing layout works and you mostly want a fresh look.

Mid-range full renovation: $50,000–$100,000. New cabinetry (semi-custom or custom), quartz or stone countertops, new flooring, updated lighting and electrical, plumbing relocations as needed, mid-range appliances, and possibly minor layout changes (relocating a sink, removing a non-load-bearing wall, opening up a peninsula). This is where most Kamloops kitchen renovations land.

High-end and structural renovation: $100,000–$250,000+. Custom cabinetry, premium countertops (large-format porcelain, exotic stone), high-end appliance package (Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele), structural changes (removing load-bearing walls, expanding the kitchen footprint, adding a butler's pantry or coffee bar), upgraded electrical service, and often a fully integrated design vision tying the kitchen into adjacent living spaces.

These ranges are deliberately wide because the choices within each tier matter as much as the tier itself. A $70,000 budget split between custom cabinets, basic countertops, and stock appliances looks very different from $70,000 spent on stock cabinets, premium stone, and a Wolf range.

The Five Decisions That Drive Your Budget

Once you've talked to a contractor and walked through the space, the same handful of decisions tend to determine where your final number lands.

Cabinetry. This is the single biggest line item in most kitchen renovations — typically 30–40% of the total budget. Stock cabinets from a big-box retailer are the cheapest path. Semi-custom cabinets (modified standard sizes, broader finish and door style options) sit in the middle and are what most mid-range Kamloops kitchens use. Fully custom cabinetry built by a local cabinet shop is the most expensive option but lets you optimize every inch of an awkward space and choose any finish, hardware, and interior accessory you want.

Countertops. Quartz is the workhorse choice in Kamloops kitchens — durable, low-maintenance, available in dozens of patterns, and priced reasonably. Natural stone (granite, marble, quartzite) costs more and requires more care. Large-format porcelain slabs are gaining ground for their seamless look and durability, but installation is specialized. Laminate has come a long way and is a legitimate budget choice for cosmetic refreshes.

Layout changes. Keeping the existing layout — sinks, appliances, and cabinets in roughly their current locations — is the cheapest path because plumbing and electrical stay where they are. Moving the sink, relocating the range, or removing a wall adds real cost: plumbing reroutes, electrical changes, drywall repair, possibly structural engineering for load-bearing walls. The change is often worth it, but it should be a deliberate decision, not an afterthought.

Appliances. A basic appliance package (range, fridge, dishwasher, microwave) from a mid-tier brand runs $5,000–$8,000. Step up to brands like KitchenAid or Bosch and you're at $10,000–$15,000. Premium packages with Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele, or similar can easily exceed $30,000 for the same four appliances. Decide your appliance budget early because it affects cabinetry sizing.

Flooring and finishes. Engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, and tile are the common choices in Kamloops kitchens. Each has merits and a wide price range. Backsplash, lighting, paint, hardware, and faucet finishes round out the visible details — individually small, collectively meaningful for both budget and final look.

How Long a Kitchen Renovation Actually Takes

For a mid-range full renovation in Kamloops, the realistic timeline is roughly 10–16 weeks from contract signing to a finished kitchen, broken down approximately as follows:

  • Design and selections (3–6 weeks): Layout drawings, cabinet design, countertop and finish selections, appliance ordering. This phase often takes longer than homeowners expect because every decision has a knock-on effect.
  • Permitting (2–4 weeks): Required for structural changes, plumbing relocations, and most electrical work. The City of Kamloops permit process is straightforward when the application is complete.
  • Cabinet and material lead times (4–10 weeks, often overlapping with above): Custom cabinets are typically 8–12 weeks from order to delivery. Stone countertops are templated after cabinets are installed, then take another 1–2 weeks to fabricate.
  • On-site construction (4–8 weeks): Demolition, framing changes, rough-in mechanical and electrical, drywall, install cabinets, template and install countertops, install backsplash, install flooring, paint, finish electrical and plumbing trim, install appliances, final detailing.

Plan to be without a functional kitchen for the on-site construction window. Many homeowners set up a temporary kitchen in a basement or laundry room with a microwave, kettle, toaster oven, and a fridge.

What Slows Kamloops Kitchen Renovations Down

Three things, mostly. Late decisions on selections (waiting until cabinets are being installed to pick the backsplash adds weeks). Surprises behind the walls (knob-and-tube wiring, undersized plumbing, structural issues — common in Kamloops homes built before the 1980s). And mid-project scope changes (deciding to also redo the adjacent dining room halfway through). Front-loading decisions and setting a clear scope before construction starts is the best defence.

When to Start Planning for a 2026 Kitchen Renovation

If you want a finished kitchen by the holiday season, late spring is the right time to start the design and contractor selection process. Cabinet lead times alone can push a project that starts in August into November or December for completion. Starting in May or June gives you breathing room.

For a fall start with completion in early 2027, you have a bit more flexibility — but reputable contractors in Kamloops book up months in advance, and getting on the calendar early is always better than later.
